My Profile

Illustrator (Hand Drawing + Digital Drawing)

Motivation

The reason why I chose this project is I like work with people and I like children very much. This is a cool project which is related to illustration, imagination and creative thinking. For illustration, because I have a talent for painting, also, there are a lot of children’s painting works can let me appreciate and give me lots of inspirations to do secondary creation them with media.

Our Team

I met a great team and there are totally five lovely and hardworking team members. And we come from different countries and it’s international to give us a precious opportunity to learn more from each other and learn the different thinkings from the different culture.

My Learning Goals

  1. Try my best to do more things so that I can practice my before’s skills especially illustration and learn more new knowledge, thinking and abilities.
  2. To help my team to build an integral work which can be liked by our targeted children so that I can develop my team work skill.
  3. To learn how to work with a real client.
  4. To learn more art&technology knowledge from my group members.

The problem

Digital Drawing is my biggest problem in this work. Since I just did a little digital work two years ago. And this time I learned adobe illustrator from the beginning. So, I lack the confidence in it.


The Summary of knowledge

The Design Choices

1. Watercolor style( hand-drawing)

 Since my “book” group member Annelie’s style is watercolor, and I feel it’s beautiful, so I want to learn from her.

2. Flat design (digital painting)

Since my group style is flat design.


What do I want to develop in the Future?

I want to learn more about typesetting of the book on InDesign.


My Strength

Concept thinking of illustration, it means I can easily to think out of a topic and theme to layout the frames and what content I want to show on the page.


My Weakness

Time management, it means I arranged my work time irregularly so that sometime I stayed up late so that I can not concentrate on at the next day.

Process

Week 1

1. What were my inspirations?

1). My coach, Rob introduced us to join the transmedia projection as one of our specialization learning since this is an opportunity to learn from a team.
2). I joined the kickoff meeting of “Transmedia” and learned some information about it.
3). I got a consultation class with the teacher Mark who is one of the “Transmedia”‘s responsible teachers and he explained more information details about those four themes.

2. What’s my goal for this week?

To know more information about different cases so that I can choose my suitable one clearly.

3. What were the extra resources?

1). Some teachers like Rob, Mark, Maaike, and Boris explained and gave the files.

2). I searched some interested professional terms which are new to me and appear in the guidance file above on the internet (Google).

4. What did I learn?

1). I know the storytelling is more about creating a creative concept and marking.
2). I know the 4 cases’ target group and their culture.

a. Project Manager

People who need to do organization, planning, staffing and controlling etc things in a project development progress. It requires not only communication ability, also management skills.

b. Producer

People who are familiar with your products and you know the industry market of it clearly, which will be better to do the production work. Because it requires not only communication ability but also enough strength that can let partners believe your production’s value so that they would like to support you in promoting the production of your products.

c. Entrepreneur

People who have the passion to build a company and do most of the works by themselves. This requires the business mind and brave personality.

d. Communication Consultant

People who have the passion to communicate with others and to inspire their thinking and finding themselves.

e. UI

User Interface which refers to the interface between people and the machine during the interactive process.

f. UX

User Experience Expert which refers to the individual subjective experience of the user in using the product.

5. What did I develop?

1). I chose the “Monster Project” as the first option since I like the children and painting both so much.

I chose the “United Nations University” as the second one because of the interesting and diverse social news in there. The “homey” was chosen as the third one because I don’t really like the technical things, but it’s better than the culture of “Artica & Dancing Bruins” in my case since I don’t like the club culture.

2). I filled the school’s profile guidance file and got My Response Summary (1).

Then, I found my objective profile on Project Manager, Production Manager, and Communication Consultation/Specialist which three positions I want to be and develop in the future.


Week 2

1. What were my inspirations?

1). I checked my grouping and knew them by contacting in WhatsApp group.
2). I joined a brief meeting in Concordia.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To know my group members and try to be familiar with them.
2). Learn clearly with the clients’ requirement.

3. What was the client’s feedback?

4. What did I learn?

The targets of this project are:

1). Let the children know that their works can be created to different new things.
2). Let ourselves know that we can use different works which have already excited to be our creating’s inspiration and we can use different mediums to present our results in a way that children can understand well.

5. What did I develop?

1). I joined a Skype online meeting with my group members.

Since this is my favorite project, I would like to do something really interested me like handmade works, concept development, after those two, I try to add my abilities like illustration, project management, and communication etc.

3). I joined a face to face meeting with my team members in our school.

I gave some advice on concept ideas, story style, and medias’ style like we try to connect our five monsters together to create a whole story.


Week 3

1. What were my inspirations?

1). Got a group consultation with teacher Maaike.
2). Got a group meeting.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To cooperate better with team members.
2). To do the monsters sketching.
3). Continuing to do brainstorming about story concept.

3. What were the Maaike’s feedbacks?

1). Learn to develop the monster sketching work so that it can be easily recognized by the children.
2). Gave it a suitable balance so that not only can we create a new monster based on children’s monster, but also can prepare the original essence of children’s monster.
3). Try to learn from The Monster Galley since this is the biggest collection of the Monster Creative Works from all over the world.
4). She will mention the “Personal Blog Writing Expectation” for Saxion later.

4. What did I learn?

1). I try to think about the children’s interesting things which can be combined with my sketch work.
For example:

2). I try to contain some original shapes of the children’s monster elements in my monster sketching.
For example:
I think the children’s the shape of a lot of small circle elements look like some buttons, so I don’t want to change them too much so that I find some real buttons and only try to make them be more detailed than before.854c17d2-880a-4084-888b-a21d6aa8fc80_副本3). I got a question that could we change too much of the children’s works?
a. Since after visiting The Monster Galley, I found that some of the artists’ work is totally different with the kid’s work.

4). I learned to use structure to write an individual blog as the previous’ examples.

5). I found that the previous team spent more time than my team this moment of this project.

5. What did I develop?

1). I try to find more images resources of my sketching basing on my thinking that not only can I give the children a good understanding of my work but also contain more original elements of the kid’s work.

Week 4

2).To finish my first sketch of the monster.

1). Try to combine a big physical media to achieve the client’s goal.

3). Try to refine the story.

3. What were the extra resources?

4. What did I learn?

1). User Journey is a kind of guidance to let the client know how to use this product.
2). There are some different types to use as a user journey basing on a clear content.

5. What did I develop?

1). I finished my first draft of the monster which is a hand drawing sketching.

    2). Tried to discuss with my group members about making a physical prototype like dress up mode or a hard paper prototype.

Since I really love to do this kind of things, also, it suits with the big and physical work goal of the client.

3). Annelie and I are in a “Book” group for doing the book and background works.

We separated the assignments in different types groups basing on different medias. Annele and I both are interested in illustration. So, we decided to do books and digital background drawings together.

4). I gave my suggestion to separate the book story into there parts of “Past”, “Present” and “Future”.

Annele and I have a “Book” group meeting to brainstorm the book’s content and structure. But we confused about how to do the same style sketching by two persons of a unitive book, and there must be some different sketching styles from two people. So, I suggested it is reasonable there is some a little difference between three different topic parts in a book. So, in the end, Annelie wrote the Book content basing on my structure.QQ截图20180201180448


Week 5

1. What were my inspirations?

1). Got a meeting with the client.
2). Got a group meeting.

2. What were my goals for this week?

To cooperate better with team members.

3. What were client’s feedbacks?

1). Make the project to be easy and simple so that the children can understand and follow the interaction easily.
2). Make kids understand where to start.
3). Think clearly what will happen on the phone?
4). To communicate with the kids and let your work get the proof from the kids.
5). Make a list of things we need.

4. What’s the extra resource?

Lecture Transmedia Storytelling 1718 given by my school.

5. What did I learn?

1). The kids need a more simple and easy-understanding user journey.
2). Always make the user journey be simple and easy to understand.

6. What did I develop?

1). I built my own style of the Monster Project – User Journey Table.

Since my group members want to add AR media in our project, and I do love to do the academic research, so I did this as a introduction information of AR. Also, for me, this is a good opportunity to let me learn this new media which I didn’t know it before.

3). I finished my first sketching of the “Past” part of the book and two backgrounds.

4). Annelie and I decided to use watercolors for the book illustration’s style. Since I can see Annelie’s watercolors illustration are really cool

, so I want to learn the watercolors style although I do love the pencil style.


Week 6

1. What were my inspirations?

1). Got a “Book” group meeting with Annelie.
2). Got a meeting with the clients’ kids.
3). Got a meeting with Mark.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To finish the “Past” part illustration of the book.
2). To learn more about the teamwork by communicating with Annelie.
3). To learn more about working with the real clients.

3. What were the feedbacks?

It’s very important to discuss and imitate group members’ style so that contain a same style for the group work.

b. For the individual blog, make sure of own role.
2). Client Kid

Some of them like our human monsters, and others like our cartoon monsters.

(Since our group members created the monsters in the different style, 
For example, my work is more cartoon which has the same tyle with the kid's

4. What did I learn?

Different clients have the different requirement. So we should try our best to satisfy their requirement.

5. What did I develop?

1). I finished my “Past”-chapter 1 illustrations, which are 5 totally papers (one is A4, the other are A5).

a. Firstly I did them by thinking clearly about the story content. And then I use imagination to think about how can I show a content clearly by combining the elements’ layout together.

The third one is “The overview of the monster world”. They are two separate parts. But after I think about use this inspiration 61f64f7ffba3f6d0e5402ec29a727836

(A girl looks up at the sky and do some imagination), I think I can use the same kid’s gesture to show “A kid is imaging something”. And since our storyboard is “The monster world is a thing imagined by this kid”. So, I try to combine these two separated storyboardsQQ截图20180201220000_副本 into one. which has the imaging kid and the monster world on the kid’s painting at the same time.

b. Since we need to contain the same style in a group work, so I try to use the same color, same elements style with other group members’ before works.

ii. I combine Annelie’s backgrounds to draw the eyes of the tree since I heard she do love the eyes staying in the tree and she has already done the background. And I try to give the same color of the tree and the similar shape of the road so that I can copy her this style to help our works be more unified.微信图片_20180201213428_副本

2). We ask a teacher how to deal with the clients’ kids’ requirement.

Week 7

1. What were my inspirations?

My group members’ notes and work. Since I had a bad time management ability, I missed my group meeting with Maaike and my other group members.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To learn about the teamwork.
2). To learn more about the illustration skills.

3. What were group’s feedbacks?

1). CONSISTENCY
– same colors ( like in backgrounds)

2). Finished the digital drawing before that Friday

4. What’s the extra resource?

1). Maaike introduced me to learn adobe illustrator tool. And I searched the Getting start adobe illustrator tutorial.
2). My group members work.

Since I started from learning adobe illustrator’s tutorial, and I did drawing work slowly, so there are other’s works there before my work. I could learn a lot from them.

5. What did I learn?

1). I knew how to use straight line tool and pen tool in adobe illustrator. They can make the line texture be more smooth.

I made the AI learning notes for learning it. And I learned it by using half a day, practiced it by drawing by monster work.QQ截图20180207160720

2). I knew how do flat design and graphic design work.

The flat design texture is more smooth. And graphic design isn’t allowed to add a shadow.

3). If I feel my drawing style is not similar to my group member’s style, I need to change it immediately.

6. What did I develop?

Firstly, I just “play” with adobe illustrator since this is the first time I use adobe illustrator and I tried to use different tools of it so that I forgot to contain the same style with my group members style. So, I just contained my original style which is similar with hand-drawing (I did hand-drawing at the beginning). But after I saw other’s work, I found my work style is totally different with their, so I tried to change and asked opinions from others. In the end, I learn from group flat design style and finished my digital drawing.


Week 8

1. What were my inspirations?

I got a “book” group meeting with Annelie.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To finish the book’s “future” chapter hand-drawing.
2). To finish the digital background sketching of kid’s bedroom.

3. What’s our discuss content?

Since Annie showed me her “present” chapter illustration, its style isn’t same totally with me although she tried to copy my “past” chapter’s style.

So, my idea is letting me draw the “future” chapter and make sure the beginning and the end chapters’ style are same. So, except to do the future’s chapter’s hand-drawing, I will finish digital background sketching of the Mr. Fluffy’s room and the kid bedroom. And Annelie will give all the backgrounds color by using photoshop.

4. What’s the extra resource?

I also searched the inspiration images from the internet.

Which I used to imitate the character’s gestures.

5. What did I learn?

We need have responsibility and team awareness when there are some problems during a teamwork if I can find the problem quickly and I think I have an ability to solve it, I need to give my idea at the first time.

6. What did I develop?

1). I use the same way with the “past” chapter drawing to finish my “future” chapter hand-drawing.

Week 9

1. What were my inspirations?

I met with Annelie at her home to finish the final work.

2. What were my goals for this week?

1). To finish the cover pages’ hand-drawing.
2). To finish discussing the edit work of our book.
3). To finish the digital background sketching of Mr. Fluffy’s room.

3. What were our discuss content?

1). I drew the cover pages hand-drawing.

Since I want to use colorful things to attract children’s eyes. And also I do like heart elements since it means children have a colorful heart, which is always different with the adults. And I want to use this concept to suit our story’s content that the monster world becomes to be gray after the adults come in. And I asked Annelie, is this concept ok? Annelie said it’s ok and just try to use more color to attract the children.

2). Annelie took the photos of our illustration and did the typesetting on InDesign.

I gave my idea of the photo’s light, I think it can be lighter than before since that day is cloudy. And I also think about the background color of some subject text page, I think the milk-white color is better than the pink color since our hand-drawing is watercolor. And the color is more soft and quiet. But the pink color in the InDesign is more light, they are not suitable.

3). We thought out of the interactive part to connect with the next board game media.

Annelie thought about how to make our book media connect to the next board game media, so I suggested to give a guidance color order at the beginning and gave different color’s letters separately. So, the children can combine the letters to a complete world of “monster”. So, we made the letters cards firstly, and Annelie bought the rope and glue them on the book page. This is the final effect.

4). We printed our Book pdf and went to the bookbinding shop to do bookbinding. but it needs some time. We need to wait.

4. What’s the extra resource?

I also search the inspiration images on the internet.

I focused on the rainbow color and the heart.

5. What did I learn?

Always keep group thinking is very important in a group work like Annelie, she can keep thinking how to connect with the next media after finishing our book media so that we can have a complete group work system.
